When a tooth has been harmed or damaged by trauma or decay, fillings are commonly used to restore its function. Dental fillings help prevent further decay by sealing off any cracks or crevices where bacteria could spread.

Dr. Sawyer uses composite (tooth colored) filling material to fix his patients’ teeth when a filling is indicated. Composite is a realistic resin material that replaces your natural tooth that has been damaged from decay or trauma. We carry a variety of shades to match your custom tooth color and get the best result.

What to expect when getting a filling

  • We first examine the tooth to assess the severity of the decay. Sometimes we may take an X-ray to get a better look.
  • On the day of the procedure, we administer local anesthesia, then use a dental handpiece to remove the damaged tooth structure and clean the cavity.
  • Next, the area will be cleaned of all bacteria and debris, followed by cement that bonds the tooth and the filling. After placing the filling, we sculpt it to fit the tooth’s natural shape.
  • After the procedure, avoid eating on the side of the filling for two hours. Some sensitivity to hot and cold is normal, but if it continues for more than two weeks or you feel any pain, we may need to adjust the filling.
  • Depending on the filling material and how well it is maintained, it can last 5 to 20 years.

How to maintain the filling afterwards

After finishing your dental filling, it is important to brush and floss around that area to keep plaque away. Over time, plaque and bacteria can breakdown the edges of a filling and cause decay underneath it. Keeping the area as clean as possible can prolong the life of your dental work and preserve the investment you made in your oral health!
